Incorporation of Pahrump

Pahrump Town Board member, Tom Waters, has published a post on his blog, Tom Waters’ Thoughts. It reads:

Open Letter to Pahrump Residents – Incorporation

After many conversations about the topic of Incorporation of the Town of Pahrump with so many of you, I decided to consolidate my response so you can read it over, think about it, and share it with your friends and acquaintances. I hope you will read this message whether you are “for” or “against” Incorporation. It does not matter because, as I listen to all of you, everyone has an opinion. J

The previous Town Board left us the groundwork to make a decision about Incorporation and, since you elected us, we must accomplish the work you elected us to do.

The census numbers were recently released and, as I stated during my campaign and continue to say, many people did not have a chance to vote “yea” or “nay” for Incorporation. If you voted “yea” or “nay” for Incorporation and have, or have not, changed your opinion, that is okay. However, since you last voted for Incorporation in the year 2000 when our population was 32,485, our Town population has increased by 48 percent (11,810) to our current population of 36,441. Please note that total voter turnout in Pahrump for the 2010 General Election was only 12,265. I have repeatedly asked that the question of Incorporation be placed on the ballot for November 2012 so everyone can inform the current Town Board whether the Town Board should proceed with the prospect of Incorporating the Town of Pahrump or terminating the idea altogether. I believe everyone is entitled to a “voice” and we should not limit the “voice” only to those residents who were here prior to the year 2000.

We do have an Incorporation Advisory Board (IAB) to advise the Town Board on issues of Incorporation pro and con. For this, they have done an outstanding job and we need to listen to these knowledgeable volunteers within our community. I ask that you attend their meetings as well so they know your views on Incorporation.

For those of you AGAINST Incorporation, please continue to state the reasons using factual data. However, those of you FOR Incorporation, you need to follow the guidance of our District Attorney if you want to get the issue of incorporation ON the ballot in 2012. According to the District Attorney and the County Clerk, you will need to get 1840 signatures of residents stating that they are in favor of the referendum of Incorporation. This figure (1840) is based on 15% of the Total Voter Turnout in the last General Election. Getting signatures is NOT the responsibility of members of the Town Board or the Incorporation Advisory Board. It would be the responsibility of a “grass-roots” organization. If you are part of that silent majority (or silent minority) that is in favor of Incorporation and would like to lead or be a part of that “grass-roots” organization, please contact Mrs. Endersby (IAB Liaison) or attend an IAB meeting and let them know what you want to do.

Be willing to “stand-up” for what you believe. Your Town Board will support you “pro” or “con” and, as much as we appreciate the e-mails stating your position, this is your opportunity to “step up to the plate” and involve the entire community.

Many of you want to know if I am ‘for’ or ‘against’ Incorporation of the Town of Pahrump. The clearest answer I can give is:

1) If it is approved to be on the ballot in 2012, I will have a definite answer before November 2012. I continue to ‘research’ this issue.

2) If it is NOT on the ballot in 2012, my declaration really won’t make any difference.

Pahrump Town Board member Tom Waters proposes the Town Board and Nye County Board of Commissioners meet to discuss topics of mutual interest?

Not a bad idea at all. Should facilitate some coordination between both groups which can lead to some progress for both the county and the town.

A tip of the hat to Mr. Waters for a constructive concept.

New Pahrump Town Board Members Swearing-in

The swearing-in ceremony new Pahrump Town Members, Carolene Endersby and Dr. Tom Waters and for all newly elected public officials will be Tuesday, December 21st at 10:00 AM in the Nye County Board of Commissioners chambers located at 2100 E. Walt Williams Drive in Pahrump.

I want to congratulate both Mrs. Endersby and Mr. Waters for their election. I think their addition to the Pahrump Town Board will mark a transition from acrimonious meetings to civil, thoughtful, and mature discussions leading to the best interests of all residents of Pahrump.

Additionally, my congratulations to our new Nye County District Attorney, Brian Kunzi. I wish him well and success in getting the DA’s office squared away.

It began like by accident. A minor every day matter many of us encounters. It was about weeds, yes weeds, taking over our yard on all sides. My wife, Lillie, and I had been able to deal with it with Roundup. But this year neither of us found ourselves physically capable of coping with those weeds.

Carolene Endersby, a friend, happened to mention we should contact Reverend Ron Fairbairn who was working with some kids trying to earn some money over the summer. I e-mailed the good pastor If you have kids available and that want to earn some money during the summer, we’d like to make arrangements to have them pull our weeds.

He emailed back I have given them your name and address and phone, they will be contacting you soon. I had no idea who “them” were. Then Ron e-mailed I forgot to mention, there is no charge!!! You cannot pay them Sir.

No charge! I thought, Why would these kids be willing to work in the hot sun to rid my yard of weeds and not be paid? I couldn’t figure it out.

The answer came by e-mail from a man I’ve never heard of…Loyd Platson. He wrote:

I am responding to your request to have youth pull weeds at your house. We do have youth available to do this as well as other odd jobs that you may have. The youth work through the NyE Communities Coalition (NyECC) under a program geared towards helping them develop positive work related behaviors and attitudes. I coordinate the Youth Workforce Development Program for NyECC.

Fortunately I hadn’t deleted the e-mail from Mr. Platson from among the scores of e-mails I receive daily. I wondered, just what is this Youth Workforce Development Program for NyECC?

Then Tom Waters asked me if I had heard anything about my yard weeds yet. I filled him in. He offered to make a phone call, which I declined.

Then came a phone call from Ken Gonzales asking if he could come by and take a look at our yard to see what needed to be done. I didn’t know Ken either. He arrived, surveyed the yard, and informed me he had a crew of kids scheduled to undertake the project two days later.

I awoke early (around 6:00 a.m.) and frankly had forgotten about Ken’s visit. I stepped onto our patio. I saw a man clipping bushes. He was part of the work crew. I looked around and saw 14 people all over the front, back and side yards quietly and diligently removing our weeds. I was absolutely shocked and amazed. They had been at it since 5:00 a.m.! By 11:00 a.m. the weeds were gone.

The work crew consisted of: Ken Gonzales (supervisor), Terri Gonzales (supervisor), David Balien, Rocky McLennan, Alex Glynn, Brian Bostain, Reece Trstensky, Jeffrey Yang, Justin Yang, Jonathan Isaccks, Andrew Gonzales, Stephen Yang, Daniel Liebig and Sharina Sheppard. A stellar group exemplifying there is positive hope in our Pahrump community.

The whole thing is part of the Nye Community Coalition. Remember Hillary Clinton’s book, It Takes A Village? That the concept is alive and well in Pahrump.

Lillie’s and my humble thank you goes out to Carolene Endersby, Ron Fairbairn, Loyd Platson, Tom Waters, Ken Gonzales, all those kids in the Youth Workforce Development Program for NyECC.
