When John Ensign, the disgraced Republican Senator, resigned earlier this year, Republicans moved quickly to install Representative Dean Heller in his stead, hoping to give him a jump start for 2012. His competition will be a fellow House member, Representative Shelley Berkley. Party registration favors Ms. Berkley, who hails from Clark County, which is more populated than Mr. Heller’s heavily Republican former district to the north. But Nevada’s ailing economy and its swing-state status combine to make this race a tossup.

Dean Heller—What are the odds he will win election to the seat in his own right?

…

Eric Ostermeier’s analysis of the 188 appointed senators (before Heller) since the 17th Amendment introduced direct Senate elections “finds that just 62 were elected to the office for the seat’s subsequent special or general election, or just 33 percent of all appointees.”

…

History aside, Heller “is anything but a safe incumbent,” considering he also faces an unrestful electorate and an energetic opponent in Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley, the analyst wrote.

Dear Congressman Joe Heck,

Thank you for your letter of Oct. 11. In my two recent letters to you I had requested that you support any bi-partisan bill that would be signed by President Obama and put Americans back to work. Sadly, neither you nor any of the Republicans in the senate signed on to support President Obama’s recent jobs for America bill, despite the fact that 75 percent of all Americans are in favor of the president’s jobs bill, according to the news media.

Your response to me was that you “introduced to stimulate the economy, promote job creation and improve efficiency in America’s visa application process all without burdening the American taxpayer.”

Burdening the American taxpayer? Are you really serious?

Obama’s bill would add a surtax of only 5-1/2 percent on the second million and higher of taxable income to support much needed infrastructure projects like rusted bridges, crumbling-down schools, highway improvements and putting more policemen, firemen and teachers back to work — plus other projects.

Notwithstanding the fact that these infrastructure projects are much needed, in fact overdue, and would increase the efficiency of business and commerce. Plus, it would create an estimated 1.9 million jobs immediately.

And you consider this to be “burdening the American taxpayer?” Even with the slight tax increase, taxes would still be lower than under Reagan.

Did you complain about taxes under Reagan be “burdening?”

I know I speak for many, including Republicans, when I tell you your lack of support for the jobs bill is a great disappointment to many, probably the majority of Nevadans.

In the future I hope that you will exercise more wisdom and courage when representing Nevada, on behalf of the jobless people, than you have in the past.

JAMES FERRELL

The above letter to Republican Congressman Joe Heck was published in the Pahrump Valley Times October 19, 2011, page A18.

I applaud Mr. Ferrell’s letter. I would hope a few thousand other people in Nye County would send their letters as well, not only to Congressman Heck, but additionally to Republican Congressman Mark Amodei, Democratic Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, and Republican Senator Dean Heller with cc’s to the Pahrump Valley Times and the Pahrump Mirror.

Jobs is not a partisan issue. It is an American issue. President Obama pointed out on TV this morning that 100% of Republican Senators and Representatives did not support his Jobs bill, to which Mr. Ferrell refers. Additionally there were a few Democratic Senators who failed the American people by not supporting the Jobs bill.

Congress isn’t cutting it. It is going to take a huge groundswell of the American people to get the job done. Individual members of Congress must be make to understand that unless they address the Jobs bill they cannot expect you to address their desire to be re-elected. Bluntly, they don’t vote for the jobs bill, you don’t vote for them. They will understand.

The Nevada Special Election is coming up rapidly. The election is for the people of Nevada to decide who they want to represent them in Congress in the new Congressional District 2 obtained by Nevada following the 2010 Census. District 2 covers all of Nevada except for the heavily populated central areas of Clark County. [Las Vegas Review-Journal] Yes, Nevada gained a seat in the House of Representatives because of its growth in population. Right now we have Shelley Berkley and Joe Heck as House representatives. When this special election is over, we will have added either Democrat Kate Marshall or Republican Mark Amodei as the third. That gives Nevada some additional influence in congress.

Early voting begins in Nye County Saturday, August 27 and runs through September 3. If you skip voting early, you can still vote September 13. I will be voting early so I do not have to stand in a long line.

The question for me is for whom do I vote? Who will represent me best in accordance with my political views? Rather than decide by throwing a dart at a dartboard I think I will try using my brain for once. Here is how I came to make the comparison between Marshall and Amodei and made my decision.

Kate Marshall

Kate Marshall has a website. Marshall’s campaign platform is:

Job Creation. She nails the top priority. She “believes … reinvesting in the backbone of our state’s economy–small businesses, and by creating an economic climate that will bring more businesses with good paying, permanent jobs to Nevada. [She] will work tirelessly to help make Nevada competitive in the new global economy through workforce development and new investment in industries such as renewable energy.” People need jobs. Her opponent does not address job creation on his website.

Small Business. She states, “Small businesses is critical for our state’s economy.” Why are they critical? Because they create good paying jobs for Nevadans. How does she plan to support business? She plans to “create tax credits to allow businesses to reinvest in their workforce, not punish them for expanding with outdated taxes and red tape.” She proposes to “incentivize the banks to lend by creating special small business loans.” Additionally, she wants to “eliminate excess and redundant regulations” that impedes success of small businesses.

Seniors. Mrs. Marshall points out some members of Congress want to “dismantle our Medicare and cut their Social Security, choosing big insurance companies and Wall Street over our golden generation.” She promises she “will fight to keep their safety nets in place because they have earned them through a lifetime of hard work and financial contributions.” Marshall believes we must not end Medicare for seniors and will oppose anyone who tries. She argues seniors earned their Medicare and Social Security and she will not let Congress balance the federal budget on the backs of our senior citizens. Kate is committed to working with all levels of government to ensure that these critical programs are strong for future generations.

Accountability and Integrity in Government. Mrs. Marshall declares she “eliminated wasteful spending in Carson City and cleaned up Nevada’s state government.” That is a broad statement. I am sure there must be lots more “wasteful spending” in Carson City. She takes credit for streamlining budgeting, auditing the Treasurer’s office, and cutting wasteful spending. She abolished no-bid contracts and “off the books deals to protect the taxpayers’ hard earned dollars.” She says, “While most politicians are looking to spend your tax dollars, [she] has made a career out of making money for taxpayers and protecting their money.” That is encouraging.

Education. An education “builds the foundation for a successful life and career,” She said. I agree. She wishes to make education “accessible and affordable.” I agree. So do my five grandkids. Marshall has actually done something in that area. She initiated the U-gift and Silver State Matching Grant programs providing better opportunities for families to start and contribute to college savings plans. She also has administered and advocated for the Millennium Scholarship Program helping double the amount of students attending Nevada’s colleges and universities.

Environment and Conservation. Marshall promises protect Nevada’s natural treasures. She understands preservation of Nevada’s natural beauty and resources has important environmental and health benefits and is crucial for Nevada’s tourism-based economy. Another help also in her placing jobs as her top priority.

Hunting and Fishing. She believes Nevada should be able to regulate hunting and fishing as it sees fit; that wildlife in northern Nevada should be bolstered. She supports Second Amendment NRA gun toters. She supports the right of law-abiding Nevadans to bear arms. Can’t ask for much more than that, right?

Mark Amodei

Mr. Amodei also has a website. There he provides his campaign platform.

Tax Fairness. Amodei says he disagrees with President Obama’s assessment that we American’s pay too little in taxes. Frankly, that depends on how one defines “we Americans.” However, I understand President Obama has been saying is that some Americans are not paying their fair share of taxes. That higher income people are not paying their fair share because of President Bush’s famous tax cuts and corporations (which are now considered “people” aren’t paying their fair share either, and additionally are receiving tax breaks and receive subsidies (read that as money) from the government to boot. I like Obama’s idea of everyone paying his or her fair share of taxes better than the way it is now.

Energy Policy. He asserts “President Obama campaigned for President saying that ‘under his energy policy, prices will necessarily go up’…, and he has made good on that campaign promise.” That dig at President Obama by Mr. Amodei does not help much.

Health Care Reform. He states “[T]he Obama Health Care Reform Program” must be repealed because it increases healthcare costs and limits access to care “is not reform.” He suggests a “responsible review” of the “health care delivery system,” reduce its cost, and “increase access to care.” He also wants to find real solutions to the costs of prescription drugs. He wants to “Put an end to artificially high costs of medical treatment stemming from escalating insurance costs and lawsuit abuse.” Who doesn’t? Mr. Amodei does not offer any clue as to how he could do all that any better than the Obama Administration. His approach is the same political rhetoric we always hear.

National Security. Amodei says, “I am proud to have served in the United States Army, and even prouder to have a daughter who has recently served in the United States Navy. For the Amodei Family, supporting the men and women of the Armed Services is a way of life.” He assures us he is going to “support the troops. Nice, but nothing more than waving the flag.

Nevada Comes First. His obligatory statement promises he will “work hard” adding “… no one should expect me to follow the party line if it is not in the best interest of the people of Nevada.” Sounds empty, since he is a former Chairman of the Nevada Republican Party.

I didn’t notice inclusion of jobs in his platform. But I did note he likes to use scare tactics in his campaign. Watch this video on YouTube. Shanghailist, a Chinese website, wrote, “Want to watch US congressional candidate Mark Amodei make an idiot of himself? Sure ya do. This is the Nevada candidate’s election campaign video, which consists of a mock Chinese news broadcast trumpeting the decline of the US and the rise of our own good fortunes. It then cuts to Amodei himself who says he would never let the China nightmare happen and then for good measure, utters the word "independence". We really like his classy scare-tactics, how Chinese troops are edited so that they’re marching over DC, but most of all how we get called a "great empire".
