Nye County Democrats held their annual Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner at Terrible’s Lakeside. The dinner was hosted by the Nye County Democratic Central Committee. Chairperson Jan Bearss, 1st Vice-Chair Tim Murray, 2nd Vice-Chair Laurayne Murray, Secretary Debra DePreta, and Treasurer Cles Saunders and a number of volunteers did a superlative job in putting it all together.

The Professional Firefighters of Nevada, Pahrump Valley Firefighters Local 4068 sponsored the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner.

The event was attended by more than 130 active Democrats, including Chairwoman Roberta Lange and Secretary Marla Turner of the Nevada State Democratic Party. Steven Horsford, Nevada State Senate Majority Leader was the keynote speaker.

Nye Democrats also hosted the Clark County Democratic Central Committee.

Nevada Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, unable to attend, sent a message to the Nye County Democrats congratulating Ralph and Barbara DeFeo for their lifetime of service to the Nye County Democratic Party.

Former Chair of the Nye County Democratic Party, Loyal Watkins and former Vice-Chair Loyle Scarlett were additionally recognized for their lifetime service to the Party.

Shelley Berkley, currently Nevada’s Representative to the House of Representatives and candidate for election to become the next Nevada Senator to replace appointed Republican Senator Dean Heller, delivered an impassioned speech.

Nevada Treasurer, Kate Marshall, Democratic candidate for the special election for Congressional District 2 presented her platform for election to the House of Representatives. Her website is www.katefornevada.com.

The mission of the Nye County Democratic Party is “To operate and maintain a grassroots network of people which is open, inclusive and accessible to all; a community organization that reaches out to all races, sexes, minorities and youth, increasing participation by Democrats in local issues and elections and serving as the focus for election of Democrats to local, state and national offices.”

The office of the Nye County Democratic Party’s Central Committee is located at 1201 S. Highway 160, Suite 105, Pahrump. (the Democrats office is across the street from the Saddle West casino). Their phone number is (775) 751-9966. The Nye Democrats official website (The Party That Cares) can be found at www.nyedems.org.

In addition Nye County Democrats can be found on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/groups/nyedemocrats/. Nye Democrats can join with 124 other Nye Democrats on the very active Facebook group where they can keep up with current political news, activities, events and interactively “talk” with each other.

You can also follow the Nye County Democratic Central Committee on Twitter at www.twitter.com/#!/NCDPCC

Nye County Democrats meet the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the IAFF Union Hall, 160 W. Emery Street in Pahrump. The next meeting is August 18.

As of July 2011 the Nevada Secretary of State reports that there are 8,727 total Democrats in Nye County. Inactive Democrat voters in Nye County comprise 504. Inactive voters are people that are registered as Democrats but do not vote regularly. There 8,223 active Democratic voters. “Active” means registered Democrats who faithfully vote in each election cycle.

There are only 36 days left until the Congressional special election in district 2 which includes Nye County. If you are not currently registered to vote the last day to register to vote by mail or agency for the September 13 special election is August 13. The last day to register to vote in person at the Nye County Clerk’s office in Tonopah (101 Radar Road) or Pahrump (1520 East Basin Avenue, Suite 108) is August 23. If you are registering to vote for the first time in Nye County you must present identification proving your identity and residence. A current driver’s license or state identification which displays your residence is sufficient. If you have any questions you can phone the Clerk’s Office at (775) 482-7318 or (775) 751-7040 to verify voter registration, according to Nye County Clerk Sandra Merlino.

Remember, unless you vote you don’t have much right to complain about political affairs. Be an informed voter. It is your duty to do so. Uninformed voters is a sure bet to perpetuate lousy government.
