But judging by the 100 people who showed up Thursday night for the opening of a Henderson campaign office for Obama, the president still has a lot of ardent supporters willing to campaign on his behalf.

The group reflected the young and minority voters who were key to Obama’s historic victory in 2008.

Organizing for America, the group that opened the office, formed shortly after Obama was inaugurated in 2009 to preserve the grassroots organization that help elect Obama and lay the groundwork for a second term.

Delray Gjestvang, a robotics programmer and car builder, admitted he doesn’t like the way things are going in Washington, but “it’s not Obama’s fault. Republicans won’t work with him.”

While some people in attendance said organizers received 300 RSVPs from people invited to the opening, Michael Campbell, press secretary of Organizing for America-Nevada, could not immediately confirm that number.

Aside from rank-and-file citizens and volunteers, some elected leaders showed up, including State Sen. Shirley Breeden, D-Henderson, said the presidential election will be a battle to protect Social Security and Medicare.

She briefly recounted what everyone in the office knows — that Nevada has been devastated by the recession, a situation that she believes has led to an increase in “lots of folks … committing suicide.”

“I don’t know how Republicans feel, but (the economic problems) do not just affect Democrats,” she added.

Nick Di Archangel, who lives near the office and is also a spokesman for the Service International Employees Union, called it “inspiring to see so many people so early showing up and getting into the campaign.”

“There was a lot of energy around his campaign the first time, and this shows he hasn’t lost any of that,” said Di Archangel, who added that he views Obama as the only candidate “who has an eye toward improvement for the middle class.”

Organizers took advantage of the large crowd. When the speeches ended, they handed out sheets with the names and phone numbers of people who had volunteered for Obama’s first presidential campaign. They urged volunteers to call and urge them to show up at the Jan. 21 caucus and come to other events.

In a news release, Organizing for America-Nevada boasted that its volunteers have already made more than 282,000 phone calls to supporters, held more than 2,500 one-on-one meetings and hosted more than 490 house parties and meetings.

They could add at least one more phone call, made by Audrey Martinelli, who sat on the sidewalk outside the office Thursday with her list of names and numbers and started making calls.

A 26-year-old UNLV student, Martinelli said Obama’s health care law touched her personally because its provision requiring insurance companies to cover those with pre-existing health problems aided a relative. Obama also increased Pell Grant funding for college students.

“I’m a student at UNLV and extending Pell Grants is what’s paying for me to be at school right now,” she said, then turned to her sheet and started punching another number into her cell phone.

You know what there is no reason that we in Pahrump, Nye County, Nevada could not follow the lead of those fine folks in Henderson, Nevada are doing, using Organizing for America, don’t you think? It isn’t going to be easy for President Obama’s re-election in 2012. Just think. If we, here in Nye County, just lay back and not do anything and let the Republicans elect their preferred President, we’re screwed. Would you want to have to think that had you not got off your duff and helped Obama you will be helping the 1% increase the income/wealth gap with the 99%? Lose your Social Security and/or Medicare if you are an old person, like me? Be shut out from a college education because you can’t afford the tuition? And on and on. Just read a bit of political news and it is clear and obvious the GOP wants to get rid of those things. Don’t find your self after election day in November 2012 regretting you didn’t do something.

So what can you do? Try this:

Join the volunteers on BarackObama.com;

Join your county’s Democratic Party. The Nye County’s is at Nye County Democratic Party;

If you aren’t registered to vote yet and will be age 18 by election day in November 2012, then register.

Be sure to participate in the Democratic Caucus on January 21, 2012;

Get active. You don’t have to devote your entire life to politics, but get yourself informed. Join your local Democratic Party.

The remainder in the rather long list of wanna-be’s are just window-dressing. They are either too inexperienced or are just interested in limited issues, or too extreme. The world is far too complicated for rookies. But then I’m a Democrat, not a Republican, I look at the world in a different light.

Among the most pressing of political issues, to me, is jobs for the unemployed and underemployed. I’m retired now, but for the overall economy jobs remain important to me because when many do well, so do I. It is inherent in the observation that a rising tide raises all boats. Over that last few decades the boats of the 1% of the population income has risen by 275% between 1979 and 2007. For 20% of the population it has grown by 65% but not nearly as fast as for the top 1 percent. For 60% of the population it has grown just under 40%. For the lowest 20% of the population income was about 18% higher in 2007 than it had been in 1979. That would be the 99%. You and I live in the 99%. [See the Congressional Budget Office report of October 2011: Trends in the Distribution of Household Income Between 1979 and 2007]

I hear much more about the single Republican issue which is to get rid of President Obama in 2012. Maybe I don’t hear it all, but that is what stands out to me.

After dilly-dallying with the Congress for over two years in his office President Obama kept trying to engage the Congress in bi-partisan resolutions to correct the myriad of problems in the United States. What I have seen was simple snubbing of the President on working on those problems. The theme seemed and seems to be that if President Obama is proposing a solution the Republicans in Congress are opposing it. They apparently are not interested in you or me, or the country, just regaining the White House.

I became exasperated with President Obama because he could apparently not comprehend the trend of the GOP. He was far more patient than I. But he seems to have finally caught on. In his weekly address to the nation he announced “We Can’t Wait to Create Jobs” taking actions to help families refinance their mortgages, put veterans to work, and lower the cost of student loans. [White House Blog]

He has circumvented Congress, and gone straight to the people explaining his American Jobs Act asking every American to put pressure on their representatives in Congress to pass the Act. Whether the American people rally to the call remains to be seen. Assuming the American people do act, it remains to be seen what the individual members of Congress do. Will they react to the will of the people or ignore their constituents and continue their representation of corporate interests—those that finance their re-election campaigns.

Last Saturday, October 29, 2011 President Obama stated, “Unfortunately, Republicans in Congress aren’t paying attention. They’re not getting the message. Over and over, they have refused to even debate the same kind of jobs proposals that Republicans have supported in the past – proposals that today are supported, not just by Democrats, but by Independents and Republicans all across America. And yet, somehow, they found time this week to debate things like whether or not we should mint coins to celebrate the Baseball Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, they’re only scheduled to work three more weeks between now and the end of the year.

And he is, issuing Executive Orders, where he can but depending on the American people to get the Jobs bill passed. With the obstacles the GOP puts in place it is a tough row to hoe. But he is really trying. Are you? Our Nevada congressional representatives may not be on board yet, help Senator Dean Heller, Shelley Berkley, Mark Amodei and Joe Heck see the light. Drop them a note.

Time to act and retake our country back from the Republican Party and their “job creators.”

FHFA, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Announce HARP Changes to Reach More Borrowers

Washington, DC – The Federal Housing Finance Agency, with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (the Enterprises), today announced a series of changes to the Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP) in an effort to attract more eligible borrowers who can benefit from refinancing their home mortgage. The program enhancements were developed at FHFA’s direction with input from lenders, mortgage insurers and other industry participants.

“We know that there are many homeowners who are eligible to refinance under HARP and those are the borrowers we want to reach,” said FHFA Acting Director Edward J. DeMarco. “Building on the industry’s experience with HARP over the last two years, we have identified several changes that will make the program accessible to more borrowers with mortgages owned or guaranteed by the Enterprises. Our goal in pursuing these changes is to create refinancing opportunities for these borrowers, while reducing risk for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and bringing a measure of stability to housing markets.”

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have helped approximately 9 million families refinance into a lower cost or more sustainable mortgage product, approximately 10 percent of those via HARP. HARP is unique in that it is the only refinance program that enables borrowers who owe more than their home is worth to take advantage of low interest rates and other refinancing benefits. This program will continue to be available to borrowers with loans sold to the Enterprises on or before May 31, 2009 with current loan-t0-value (LTV) ratios above 80 percent.

The new program enhancements address several other key aspects of HARP including:

Eliminating certain risk-based fees for borrowers who refinance into shorter-term mortgages and lowering fees for other borrowers;

Removing the current 125% LTV ceiling for fixed-rate mortgages backed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac;

Waiving certain representations and warranties that lenders commit to in making loans owned or guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac;

Eliminating the need for a new property appraisal where there is a reliable AVM (automated valuation model) estimate provided by the Enterprises; and

Extending the end date for HARP until Dec. 31, 2013 for loans originally sold to the Enterprises on or before May 31, 2009.

An important element of these changes is the encouragement, through elimination of certain risk-based fees, for borrowers to utilize HARP to refinance into shorter-term mortgages. Borrowers who owe more on their house than the house is worth will be able to reduce the balance owed much faster if they take advantage of today’s low interest rates by shortening the term of their mortgage.

The Enterprises plan to issue guidance with operational details about the HARP changes to mortgage lenders and servicers by November 15. Since industry participation in HARP is not mandatory, implementation schedules will vary as individual lenders, mortgage insurers and other market participants modify their processes.

Dear Congressman Joe Heck,

Thank you for your letter of Oct. 11. In my two recent letters to you I had requested that you support any bi-partisan bill that would be signed by President Obama and put Americans back to work. Sadly, neither you nor any of the Republicans in the senate signed on to support President Obama’s recent jobs for America bill, despite the fact that 75 percent of all Americans are in favor of the president’s jobs bill, according to the news media.

Your response to me was that you “introduced to stimulate the economy, promote job creation and improve efficiency in America’s visa application process all without burdening the American taxpayer.”

Burdening the American taxpayer? Are you really serious?

Obama’s bill would add a surtax of only 5-1/2 percent on the second million and higher of taxable income to support much needed infrastructure projects like rusted bridges, crumbling-down schools, highway improvements and putting more policemen, firemen and teachers back to work — plus other projects.

Notwithstanding the fact that these infrastructure projects are much needed, in fact overdue, and would increase the efficiency of business and commerce. Plus, it would create an estimated 1.9 million jobs immediately.

And you consider this to be “burdening the American taxpayer?” Even with the slight tax increase, taxes would still be lower than under Reagan.

Did you complain about taxes under Reagan be “burdening?”

I know I speak for many, including Republicans, when I tell you your lack of support for the jobs bill is a great disappointment to many, probably the majority of Nevadans.

In the future I hope that you will exercise more wisdom and courage when representing Nevada, on behalf of the jobless people, than you have in the past.

JAMES FERRELL

The above letter to Republican Congressman Joe Heck was published in the Pahrump Valley Times October 19, 2011, page A18.

I applaud Mr. Ferrell’s letter. I would hope a few thousand other people in Nye County would send their letters as well, not only to Congressman Heck, but additionally to Republican Congressman Mark Amodei, Democratic Congresswoman Shelley Berkley, and Republican Senator Dean Heller with cc’s to the Pahrump Valley Times and the Pahrump Mirror.

Jobs is not a partisan issue. It is an American issue. President Obama pointed out on TV this morning that 100% of Republican Senators and Representatives did not support his Jobs bill, to which Mr. Ferrell refers. Additionally there were a few Democratic Senators who failed the American people by not supporting the Jobs bill.

Congress isn’t cutting it. It is going to take a huge groundswell of the American people to get the job done. Individual members of Congress must be make to understand that unless they address the Jobs bill they cannot expect you to address their desire to be re-elected. Bluntly, they don’t vote for the jobs bill, you don’t vote for them. They will understand.

Norquist is not the commander-in-chief of the military.

But he seems to be more powerful than any other including Nevada Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Photo: Grover Norquist.

Norquist is not elected. He is what he is, unanswerable to no one so far as I can tell.

Why is he the most power person in Washington you ask?

Republicans in Congress won’t sneeze without Norquist’s approval.

Norquist has their original signed copy of the Americans for Tax Reform pledge locked up in a fireproof vault. Ninety-five percent of Republicans in Congress signed it and Grover’s iron grip on all of them has never been so fully on display, therefore gaining a lot more scrutiny in the media. [The Last Word]

On July 12, two days ago, Norquist tweeted:

“Greedy people want money they didn’t earn…other people’s money. Obama, Reid and Pelosi are very greedy.”

You can tweet him back if you like @GroverNorquist.

Anthony Reyes, the author of the article on which this blog post is based wrote,

“Yes, the dude who reinforces billionaires’ arms over their bags of money is calling people greedy.

“The dude who passionately protects the incomes of hedge fund managers, Wall Street bankers, corporate jet owners and oil/ethanol profiteers. The dude who wants to prevent the slightest increase in their taxes or any changes to deductions or subsidies is calling people greedy.”

Norquist and Jack Abramoff are close friends and have been since their college days when both were in the College Republicans, writes Reyes.

Documents in the federal probe of the Abramoff scandal revealedGrover “allowed his nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, Americans for Tax Reform, to be used as a pass-through for money that Abramoff’s clients handed over to finance lobbying campaigns aimed at influencing public officials. For his trouble, Norquist kept a cut of the funds.”

Grover Glenn Norquist is president of Americans for Tax Reform. He is a conservative tax activist.

The Tax Reform Pledge “is a written promise by legislators and candidates for office that commits them to oppose tax increases.” [Wikipedia] There are two versions, one for the federal level and the other for the state level. Presumably Republicans in Nevada are covered by the pledge which might well explain the reluctance of Governor Sandoval’s abhorrence to spread the Nevada tax burden over a broader base.

We peasants should be acquainted with people like Grover Norquist if, for no other reason, they impact our daily lives, though we have no say-so in their doing so.

Norquist grew up wealthy in Massachusetts. A person I think of as having been born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His father was a Vice-President of Polaroid. He holds a BA and MBA from Harvard University.

Politically he worked in the Richard Nixon campaign. He founded the Americans for Tax Reform at the request of the Republican Messiah, Ronald Reagan. He fought against the Clinton healthcare plan.

In 2009 he was paid $200,000 in compensation from Americans For Tax Reform for part-time work (24 hours a week). It is safe to say he has never struggled financially. It is doubtful he even knows any of us peasants.

He held a position as an economist for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from 1983-1984. He was a co-author of the Contract With America with Newt Gingrich. He campaigned for George W. Bush in both 2000 and 2004. He was involved with crafting the Bush tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.

He helped Arnold Schwarzenegger with his plan to privatize CalPers.

He was quoted as saying:

“I don’t want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub.”

By the way Jack Abramoff began serving his prison term on November 15, 2006 at a minimum security prison camp of Federal Correctional Institution, Cumberland, Maryland. He resided at a halfway-house in Baltimore, Maryland and worked for Tov Pizza earning between $7.50 and $10.00 per hour. He got out of the joint (if you want to call that “the joint”) on December 3, 2010. He no longer works for Tov Pizza. [Wikipedia]

Maybe crime does pay.
