Nevada ranks last in high school graduation rates

Cindy ReidThis week, Education Week released its annual survey of high school graduation rates – and Nevada sits dead last at 51st, below all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Less than 42% of Nevada students graduate high school, compared to 69% nationwide. And we aren’t just last – we’re last by a mile. Nevada’s 41.8% graduation rate was so bad that it was more than 12 percentage points worse than second-to-last-ranked New Mexico’s 54.9% graduation rate.

That’s a devastating statistic for all of us, and it translates to 133 students dropping out of school today, and every single day of the year. As Rory said in a statement this morning, this is an educational crisis, an economic crisis, and a moral crisis.

That’s why Rory has made educational success the centerpiece of his campaign for governor, and why he will make overhauling Nevada’s education system the centerpiece of his administration. He needs your help to do it.

The trend for Nevada is not good and we have to turn it around. Over the ten-year period cited in the report, Nevada’s graduation rate tumbled 36 points – another worst-in-the-nation mark.

Rory is determined to change all that. His EDGE plan will be a paradigm shift in our educational system that transforms our schools and takes Nevada to the cutting edge of reform.

Rory’s opponent has the opposite approach, promising new cuts to schools totaling hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of teachers laid off.

It’s unacceptable and we need your help today to turn things around. Based on these new numbers, experts predict that 23,908 students in the class of 2010 will have dropped out – 133 students today – and every day.

There is no time to waste. Please, join the effort to rebuild our schools by contributing $25, $50, $100, or more today.

Rory has a plan to finally address this crisis and move our schools in the right direction – for our families, for our economy, and for our future. Please send a message that we must stop the excuses and address education today.
