Biography of Brian Kunzi candidate for Nye County District Attorney

In my effort to bring as much information as I can to readers of this blog I offer the following biography of Brian Kunzi, a Democrat, running for District Attorney of Nye County, Nevada.

BIOGRAPHY

Brian currently is the Director of the Insurance Fraud Unit and the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit in the Office of the Nevada Attorney General. Brian has worked in the Attorney General’s Office for 11 years previously serving as the Children’s Advocate and in the Bureau of Consumer Protection.

As the Children’s Advocate, Brian was responsible for authoring and implementing the statewide AMBER Alert system for abducted children. Brian has a long history of public service having served on the first commission that developed community notification standards for sexual offenders, the Attorney General’s Domestic Violence Taskforce, the AMBER Alert Review Committee and most recently on the Governor’s Auto Theft and Insurance Fraud Task Force. Brian also volunteers with the Clark County Bar Association- Trial by Peers Program, is on the Nevada KIDSCOUNT executive committee, and served as a mediator on the State Bar Fee Dispute Committee.

Brian and his wife Linda have four children and have resided in Pahrump since December of 1998. Amanda is completing her second year of law school at the University of Seattle. Eric is completing his degree in music education at the University of Nevada, Reno, while Alyson and Bret are students at Pahrump Valley High School.

Brian has been active in community affairs, particularly involving our youth. He has coached numerous softball and basketball teams as well as having been the head boy’s basketball coach at Rosemary Clarke Middle School. He has served on the PVHS School Improvement Committee, currently serves on the Nye County School District Truancy Panel and has been a community advisor to the School Construction Committee and School Safety Committee. Brian is a 30 year member of the B.P.O Elks and is a Past Exalted Ruler for Reno Lodge #597.

Brian has been a prosecutor for over 15 years and has been a litigator for his entire 26 year legal career. Brian got his start in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’ Corps. He remained in Indiana following his 4 year active duty tour working with a litigation firm in Indianapolis before returning to his Nevada roots. He practiced for 5 years in Reno before becoming the Mineral County District Attorney in his hometown of Hawthorne.

Brian’s jury trial experiences include both criminal defense and prosecution in addition to civil matters. His jury trial experience includes cases involving sexual assault, sexual molestation, felony DUI, arson, property crimes, drug offenses, insurance fraud, workers’ compensation fraud, negligence actions, property damage and construction defects. He also has experience handling litigation involving water law, personnel actions, property taxes, family law, probate procedures and zoning regulations.

Brian obtained his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, with distinction. He was in the honors program and received an award as a Distinguished Military Graduate. He graduated with distinction from the University of the Pacific-McGeorge School of Law. See also. He was selected into the Order of the Coif (Top 10%), was a member of the Traynor Honor Society and was the Managing Editor for the Pacific Law Journal.

Brian was raised in Hawthorne, Nevada, having moved there when he was two years old. He graduated from Mineral County High School. His Mother was a native-Nevadan having been born and raised in the Mason Valley.

One of his fondest memories was as an Eagle Scout being selected to serve as the Governor during Scout Government Day, shadowing then Governor Mike O’Callaghan. Brian had the honor of being awarded his Eagle Scout Award by Governor O’Callaghan and later served on the Governor’s Youth Advisor Council. The time spent with Governor O’Callaghan continues to serve as an inspiration for how to be a public servant.

    Yes he is. I had breakfast with him at Saddle West Saturday morning. We chatted about an hour. We both went to the same law school (McGeorge) though years apart. His having achieved the Order of the Coif and being Managing Editor of the Pacific Law Journal are noteworthy accomplishments, at leas to other lawyers.

    I intend to back him in his election effort and help him where I can. Thanks for your comment. Haven’t heard from you in awhile.
