Are funeral expenses tax deductible

Since I’m now 76 years old I may pay more attention to dying than I should, but this tax deductible thing came across my desk so I thought I’d share it for other 76 year-olds out there. The info comes from Tributes.com.

It is a common misconception that burial or funeral expenses, including the cost of a cemetery plot are tax deductible. They are not deductible on that deceased taxpayer’s individual return, or if married and filing jointly the couple’s tax return.

It figures. But I suppose I needn’t worry much, you have to have an income in order for it to be taxed.

I think President Obama and Senator Harry Reid ought to take a look at this and consider including funeral expenses as a tax deduction. Times being what they are widows could use the deduction. Women generally out live their husbands and need whatever financial breaks they can get.

What do you think?

It’s a shame that a loved one’s funeral has such a nasty effect on the living. I just spent $7600 on my wife’s mother’s funeral. Why on earth is this not a deduction? If NOBAMA fixes this, I just might like him afterall.
