The Las Vegas Sun today has an editorial about the FDA and the safety of the food we get—specifically food poisoning. The editorial states:
The federal government estimates that 76 million people in this country suffer from food-borne illnesses every year, resulting in hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths.
Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich. said “Americans are dying because the FDA doesn’t have the authority to protect them.”
The Senate passed HR 2997 last Tuesday providing funding for the FDA. It does take some money for the FDA to inspect the safety of the food we eat. Remember the salmonella and the Georgia peanut company last January?
How did Nevada Senator John Ensign (ProjectVoteSmart) (OpenSecrets) (Wikipedia) vote on the appropriations bill? Nay. [United States Senate]
A hat tip to Blue Sage.
