Cash for Clunkers survives

The Cash for Clunkers program, only a week old, was designed to encourage owners of pollution-spewing gas guzzlers to trade them in on new, more efficient cars, helping the hard-pressed auto industry and the environment, too. Enticed by rebates of $3,500 to $4,500, owners are jumping at the offer. [Reno Gazette Journal]

The government had put $1 billion into the Cash for Clunkers program initially. The program has been so successful it ran out of money already.

But, the House hastened to refuel the program on Friday, voting to pour in $2 billion to prop up the trade-in deals that have all but overwhelmed suddenly booming car dealers and exhausted the $1 billion the government had set aside. The Senate has yet to act, (they’re on their August Recess and have left Washington) but the White House said weekend deals would count, no matter what.

So how did our illustrious Nevada Representatives vote? Shelley Berkley, D-Las Vegas, and Dina Titus, D-Henderson, voted in favor of the measure. Wouldn’t you know, Dean Heller, R-Carson City, voted against it.

Well…we went tire kicking last night to see about this. Our ’94 Maxima doesn’t qualify with a number of 19; has to be 18. Even thought we want to buy a 29, still no-can-do. This is clearly to get the American guzzlers off the road but I’n betting the furrin makes will end up with the most sales.

I drive a 98 Ford Escort. 126,000 miles and it still gets 40+ mpg on the highway. So while I would LOVE for someone to give me $4,500 towards a new car — no way do I qualify for htis handout. And what really irks me is my Escort gets BETTER mileage than most of the cars people are buying with this subsidy!

If Congress had done its job over the past 30 years there would have been strict fuel efficiency standards in place long ago. No one would have a car getting 12 mpg, and they sure as hell wouldn’t be trading it in now for one getting 25 mpg as though that’s some BFD.

So no, I am not thrilled with this program that rewards the most irresponsible among us.
