“Doug Hampton spoke publicly for the first time today about the affair his wife [Cynthia Hampton] had with Sen. John Ensign, saying the Nevada Republican continued his pursuit even after intermediaries tried to get him to stop,” writes J. Patrick Coolican in today’s Las Vegas Sun.

Hampton’s comments came during an exclusive two-part interview with Sun columnist Jon Ralston, to air tonight at 5:30 p.m. and tomorrow on “Face to Face with Jon Ralston.” [Read more →]

Nevada ranks last in allocating federal stimulus money

Money_Stacks Mark Robison writes in today’s Reno Gazette Journal that “Nevada ranks last in the nation for having allocated federal stimulus funds for transportation projects, according to a study by the investigative journalism site ProPublica.org.”

That stimulus money was supposed to get hiring and employment of people going by building infrastructure. Remember all that talk we heard on TV about “shovel ready” projects ready to go?

With Nevada’s high employment rate one would think all that stimulus money allocated to Nevada would be busy building stuff and that Nevada’s unemployment rate would be dropping.

So I took Mr. Robison’s suggestion and zipped over to see how Nevada is doing with the $201,352,460 got. Sure enough, Robison was right in his article. Nevada ranks dead last in the nation in getting that money to work. According to the ProPublica chart Nevada has only allocated the money for 13 projects.

None of that stimulus money is doing anyone any good setting in some bank account.

Anyone have any idea why Nevada is so slow?

Exploring Bing the new search engine

chrome There are more and more search engines one can use. Google, Yahoo!, Amazon, Answers, Creative Commons, eBay, Wikipedia, Twitter Search, are all on my computer, and now there is Bing.

I’m going to try out Bing for awhile and see how it works. I use search engines a lot, looking up information I use to write blog posts is a frequent reason I use search engines. I have, for a long time relied on Google, which is probably the grand daddy of search engines. It is hard to beat.

But the browser one uses to surf the internet is closely tied to the search engines. I formerly used Internet Explorer 7 which worked well. Then Microsoft upgraded it to version 8. I upgraded but have found it crashes on me as often as not. So I switched to Firefox version 3.5 which has been much more reliable than IE 8. Google now has another browser called Chrome. I’m going to use it for awhile and see how well it performs.

For one who does a lot of work using the Internet Search Engines and Browsers are important. Researching using Search Engines is really an art. Learning how to construct the search terms takes some thought and planning to zero in on the particular topic being sought.

I spend a lot of time looking for ancestors in my family tree and for writing this blog. I have an interest in such things, many don’t. We’ll see how it all goes.

Heller may not run against Reid

The Las Vegas Sun is reporting that Republican Dean Heller is giving strong hints he will not run against Senator Harry Reid in 2010. [Las Vegas Sun]

It is now being speculated that he might run for Governor of Nevada.

It is unclear how much Heller likes Washington. His wife and children have moved back West after a stint in D.C. Heller told the Sun last year that he sleeps on a cot in his office, which is a badge of honor among some Republican members but also might indicate he is not enamored of Washington.

If Heller decides to run for Governor that will open up his Congressional seat for either Cindy Trigg or Paul Reeves, both Democrats, both currently running to become the Democratic Party’s nominee to run for it.

Trigg and Reeves will be appearing for a campaign event in Pahrump, Nevada on Monday, August 3 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., at Honeysuckle Park. They will each give their campaign speeches and take follow-up questions from Erin Neff, former columnist with the Las Vegas Sun and currently author of Progress Now Nevada.
