Democrats may go it alone on healthcare reform

medical So reports Time today.

Democrats generally are standing behind their position that a health care system overhaul must include a government-sponsored plan that would be available to middle-class workers and their families.

New York Senator, Democrat Charles Schumer, said this option now seems even more of a necessity in view of unsuccessful behind-the-scenes attempts to get a deal with Republicans on nonprofit co-ops as an alternative to a public plan.

Schumer’s remark about a “nonprofit co-op as an alternative to a public plan” is the first time I’ve heard of it. A separate Time article says an “approach that is suddenly starting to emerge on Capitol Hill as an alternative to a public plan — nonprofit, consumer-run health-insurance cooperatives.” [Read more →]

Prescription Discount Cards are Available

medical That is, according to the Nye County official web site. The card is free. You can even use the card for prescriptions for you pet. You have to use the card at a “participating retail pharmacy.”

They confuse me a bit on their FAQ page. They state “This plan is not insurance.” Then in the next section they state “Your card cannot be used in conjunction with other insurance.” Reading that as a lawyer I ask, “If the plan is not insurance, then how can it possibly be used in conjunction with other insurance?”

Oh well, if you are interested in the Prescription Discount Card I’d ask them (whomever “them” is.)

One other thing, just who are these “participating retail pharmacies?” They tell you there are 57,000 of them and give you a phone number to call to find out if any pharmacy in your location participates.

Oh, don’t mention this to any Republican. They might be shocked senseless and confuse this Prescription Discount Card plan as some kind of socialism. But then quickly recover when they learn the card gets you an average 20% discount on your prescription. I’m sure they will—in any event reject the Card because we cannot support any kind of socialized medicine, now can we?

Notice of Default fee increase

image

I thought Jim “no new taxes” Gibbons said he wouldn’t increase taxes. Then I don’t understand the News Flash on the Nye County Recorder’s web page. It reads:

Notice of Default fee increase effective July 1, 2009.

The fee will increase for the recording of a Notice of Default Effective July 1st, 2009. There will be an additional $50.00 fee on top of the standard recording fees. [fee schedule effective July 1st, 2009...]

It appears that if one wishes to record a Notice of Default and Election to Sell you must pay the Recorder $64 + $1.00 for each additional page to record it. Wonder why it costs $50 more on July 1 when it only cost $14 on June 30?

The Recorder seems to be a stickler for detail and means it.  He warns:

There must be a blank space 3×3 inches on the top right hand corner of the first page and a 1 inch margin on all sides of the document. Page size must be no larger than 8 ½” x 11”. The document must be in black ink, signatures must be in blue or black ink. If these requirements are not met a $25 non-conformity fee will apply.

Wonder what law, if any, allows the Recorder to charge a $25 non-conformity fee? Wonder if one one violates that non-conformity fee provision three times it would mean life without parole, sort of like “three strikes and you’re out?”

Guy Manyard Wood and Meredith Willson

meredith_wilson_and_guy_m_wood

My congratulations to Neal Freeman for finding and sending me the above letter from Meredith Willson to my uncle, Guy Manyard Wood.

The file above is a bit difficult to read so I’ll transcribe it here:

National Broadcasting Company, Inc.
A Member of Radio Corporation of America
RCA Building, Radio City, New York 20, N.Y.

January 23, 1952

Mr. Guy M. Wood
820 A Street NW
Ardmore, Oklahoma

Dear Mr. Wood:

I certainly remember the “Colt Hamilton” now that your letter has prodded my memory. To my five-year-old brain he was a very sensitive wonderful animal.

My sister Dixie is in the middle of writing a book just at present which will be published sometime late this year. My father and mother both passed away in 1931.

Certainly nice of you to think of me and to write me such an interesting letter, and of course, the box of pecans is a very generous suggestion – I’m sure Mrs. Willson would enjoy them. Incidentally our home address is Hotel Duane, 237 Madison Avenue, New York City, New York. Thanks again for your letter.

Sincerely,

Meredith Willson

This photo is of Guy Manyard Wood working in his pecan orchard. Though I don’t know when the photo was taken it would appear to have been sometime during the 1950’s when the letter exchange occurred between him and Mr. Willson. The photo would have been taken near Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Guy was my uncle. He customarily sent us a bag of pecans each Christmas.

Music_Man_Willson Meredith Willson is a noteworthy fellow, which makes the letter of even more interest. He is shown at the piano in this photo.

Robert Meredith Willson (May 18, 1902 – June 15, 1984) was an American composer, songwriter, conductor and playwright, known for writing the book, music and lyrics for the hit Broadway musical The Music Man, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1958. The cast recording of The Music Man won the first Grammy Award given for best cast album, and its 1962 film adaptation was a success.

The Music Man is one of my favorite movies. Willson had a distinguished career as you can read on Wikipedia. The fact he took the time to write to Uncle Guy about the “Colt Hamilton” horse which he saw when he was five years old impresses me.

I would love to have a copy of the letter Uncle Guy wrote to Mr. Willson and to learn more about the horse. Neal, Uncle Guy’s grandson, informs me:

“The horse Colt Hamilton of Guy Wood.  Evidently toured with the Ringling Brother Circus in 1907-8

“Meredith Willson is well known.

“First documented proof of the horse act other than Guy Wood obit, the one he wrote and which was changed by the Funeral Home due to length.  Naomi authorized the change.”

“Neal”

Naomi is Uncle Guy’s daughter, Neal is her son.

If anyone out there knows anything about Guy Manyard Wood and “Colt Hamilton” I would dearly love to hear from you.
