2009 Graduating Class Needs Some Help

I received the following in an email from Holleman Ranch. I decided to post it here because it concerns, it appears, the 2009 Graduating Class of Pahrump Valley High School. It is, when you read it, clearly a matter which should be supported by the Pahrump Community.

I hope the Pahrump Valley Democratic Party Meetup supports it as well.

Here is the email, unedited, for your review and consideration.

Hi,
Last year we held our 7th annual Pahrump Grad Night.  As in previous years, it was a resounding success, with over 200 students in attendance.  We had over 90% of the senior class – and dates – in attendance!   It may not seem like much, and we will never know the real effect of keeping 250+ young people safe & sober for at least one of the riskiest nights of their lives, but for one night… we made a difference!  For one night – we kept them, and their friends, alcohol and drug free.  (Keep in mind that many freshman & sophomores also attend local grad parties and get involved with drugs and alcohol at them—so they had no parties to go to and get in trouble! ). Not to mention the rest of the community safer without them on the roads!

Over 100 businesses and individuals are what made it happen.  Last year we gave out in excess of $20,000.00 in prizes to the seniors in attendance.  Computers, Stereos, TVs, DVD players, kitchen appliances, microwaves, and a lot more were awarded.  All types of things that a young person might need after leaving home and going on to college or life.   Every senior wins prizes, in addition to having an entire night ( until 3am!) filled with FREE food, entertainment, fun and excitement!

This year’s theme… “Medieval  Times ”, is, as you can guess,  medieval castles themed night.   Beginning at 10 pm the night of graduation,  (June 4th)  and ending at 2am, we provide a full night of fun; FREE to the senior and his/her date.  The committee will turn our local community center & park into a, closed to the public, medieval castle for the night.   As it was last year, senior parents provide the food and Junior Class parents provide the chaperones and labor.  The grad night committee takes no expense money from our prize donations.  Everything is donated.  From paper, postage & fencing, to decorations, security(volunteer ran by Captain Bill Beck of NCSO) entertainment & prizes; everything is donated, so that 100% of money raised goes to the prizes for the kids.  This is where you come in.  We need prizes for the seniors.  ( Only the graduating seniors are eligible for the big end of the night prizes.)  We are asking for either donations of prizes ( size doesn’t matter as small prizes are grouped together to equal larger ones) or for money for the committee to buy prizes with.  Any size donation helps – we combine the $ to buy the gifts. We know that we are in a very tight economy – but even the smallest of donations goes a long way when combined together!

At the end of grad night the seniors are given an envelope with prize cards inside.  These prize cards tell the senior what he has won and where he goes to pick it up.  You may have your donated prize be picked up either at your own place of business or at the committee office.  Each senior, and his date, are given a welcome package, which includes some free gifts and a letter from the committee telling the senior who all came together and helped sponsor this grad night for them.  This gives them the opportunity to go out and personally thank each sponsor.   And to know that their own community came out in support and praise of their accomplishments.  The letter lists the sponsors and their address, etc.  The vast majority of seniors will leave Pahrump and go on to their future somewhere else.  We want to show them that Pahrump is a good place to call “home.”  To give them the knowledge that in graduating High School  they have accomplished something that will last them a lifetime.  Please help us make this come true.

We can arrange for pick up of your donation or you can drop it off at Pahrump Party Supply.

Thank you so much for listening/ reading.
