What is Swine Flu?

041028-N-9864S-021 It is in today’s news. Since Nevada adjoins California, which seems to have a lot of swine flu and whatever it is I don’t want it, I looked it up on Wikipedia.

Symptoms include fever, disorientation, stiffness of the joints, vomiting, and loss of consciousness ending in death.

Doesn’t sound good. In the U.S., approximately 675,000 people died in 1918 from it. 50-100 million died worldwide. Right now Mexico has more than 1,000 cases of it.

The current strain of the swine flu virus is H1N1. There is concern if will be a pandemic because it is a new strain of it and populations have not been vaccinated. The virus appears to infect by human-to-human transmission. [Wikipedia]

How do you try to prevent becoming infected? See the Wikipedia article that discusses infection control.

And good luck!

I don’t know what is going to happen with this torture thing. I watched Bill Maher last night and he had a guest who was an expert on torture, plus a victim of it. He was an avid supporter of making sure those responsible are punished. I know that the President is relunctant to prosicute anyone for torture, and I can see why. But it also an important principal to see that people who said torture was okay get punished. I think this is one of those issues that I need leadership on. I am glad we have a president who I can actually trust with leading me.
