Bobby Jindal stubs his toe in response to President Obama

Bobby Jindal Politics is a delicate and brutal profession. Every time a politician opens his mouth he draws attention to him/herself. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Bobby Jindal, Republican governor of Louisiana, is now getting hit from both Republicans and Democrats for his performance in responding to President Obama’s speech to the Joint Session of Congress the other night.

Jindal seems like a nice fellow. A ready smile. Friendly. He is said to be interested in running for President against Obama in 2012. He won’t make it.

Jindal repeated a favorite Republican explanation for why they voted en masse against President Barack Obama’s $787 billion economic recovery package. He said the bill “is larded with wasteful spending” that includes “$8 billion for high-speed rail projects, such as a magnetic levitation line from Las Vegas to Disneyland.” [Las Vegas Sun]

No, the reason the Republicans voted against Obama’s economic recovery package is because they just can’t bring themselves to support ordinary Americans. They have a one-track mind—cut taxes—especially for the wealthy. A substantial majority of Americans support Obama’s approach. The Republican Party is focused on representing the Republican Party not the American people. They are desperately trying to find a way to rebuild their party base, which at present are so fiscally right wing they can’t see straight.

As Obama has said repeatedly, when doing the same things over and over and over which don’t work, stop doing it and try something else. Which is what he is doing.

As the Sun and many other media outlets have reported, Jindal’s assertion about the “sin express” high speed rail project from LA to Las Vegas is not in Obama’s economic recovery package.

As the Sun says, “It was a strong line, one Republicans have used for weeks. And it is false.”

This kind of misleading rhetoric has become commonplace with the Republican party. We’ve just gone through eight years of it during the Bush administration. We don’t need anymore of it.
